Dr. Michael Horn Talks about Juvederm
Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Horn recently wrote an article concerning Juvederm, a gel used to eliminate facial wrinkles. According to Dr. Michael Horn, facial wrinkles and creases begin to appear in your lips and skin as the underlying collagen and elastic fibers begin to break down and wear out. While this breakdown is part of the natural aging process, it can also results from excessive squinting, frowning, and smiling. Until recently, the most frequently used material for filling facial wrinkles and frown lines was injectable collagen. Recently, hyaluronic acid has exploded on the screen as the longer-lasting, more natural filler preferred by physicians worldwide.
Now a natural, cross-linked non-animal hyaluronic acid has been developed using biosynthesis, and will not cause an allergic reaction. This new hyaluronic acid, called “Juvederm,” has been used in Europe for many years.
Dr. Michael Horn answered three frequently asked questions about Juvederm.
Q: How does Juvederm work?
A: Dr. Michael Horn: Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal-clear gel. It is injected into the skin to create volume, resulting in a healthy and vital appearance. When injected into the lip, it can restore a more natural and/or sensuous look. In contrast to other implants, Juvederm is not extracted from animals. This means that you don’t have to worry about an allergic reaction. Juvederm is perfectly safe to use instantly without pre-testing.
Q: How long does it last?
A: Dr. Michael Horn: It varies from individual to individual. The length of time your treatment will last depends on many factors such as your skin, your lifestyle and your age. Some patients find that the effect remains after 9 months. However, the average lip treatment lasts for about four to five months due to their higher vascularisation.
Q: How will I look after my treatment?
A: Dr. Michael Horn: Following your injections, normal activities can be resumed within a few hours. Discomfort is minimal. The treatment site may have a little swelling, which may last a few hours. There may be some slight bruising which can be covered with make-up. Depending on the area treated, correction usually lasts from four to nine months.
