The Importance of Public Policy and Women’s Rights

According to Clarke E. Cochran, a political science professor at Texas Tech University, the term public policy refers to the actions of the government and the intentions that determine those actions. It consists of political decisions for the implementation of specific programs to attain the goals of the society. Although the term may also be applicable to other organizations such as private companies or non-government organizations, the term is focused more on the governmental aspect.

A public policy thus serves as a system, which is agreed upon to achieve the objectives of the organization; this system may be financial, political, administrative or management. It is a set of interconnected decisions that are made by the government, private sectors or non-government organizations, which include the selection of goals and the ways of achieving these goals within a given position. In order for them to successfully accomplish the specific outcome, those decisions should also be within the limitations and the capacity of the institution.

Public policy is therefore important as it attends to the purpose of an organization, intending to create positive impacts. It is established in order for an organization to gain favorable company advantages as well as to steer clear of negative consequences that the company may experience. A public policy is important as it serves different purposes; it may be created in order to distribute supplies and services to the members of the organization. It may also serve to oblige a particular behavior as what is expected from a person or organization, or it may also limit or control their discretion.

An example is the benefit-seeking policy of the State of California. A modified policy stresses the use of high-occupancy vehicle lanes to hybrid vehicle owners as well as it provides for $1,000 in tax credits. As a result, the percentage of hybrid vehicles in California has significantly been augmented.

Another example is the case of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), its public policy program accentuates the organization’s undertaking to progress fairness and impartiality for women by way of conducting research, implementing advocacies, providing education, and focusing on women’s needs, problems, and aspirations.

Women’s rights are very essential as they empower women around the world to become more visible and enable them to make a lasting impact on the world. They cement the ideals and principles that women have been fighting for over the decades. Women’s rights have influenced the equality of women with men, giving women the right to vote, the right to run for public office or even the right to engage themselves in war. The rate of female education is now rising, giving them the power to manage their resources and to become a strong voice especially in the male-dominated world of politics.
