Lady Bird Johnson honored at library dedication
On Nov. 13, former first lady Lady Bird Johnson’s memory was honored with the dedication of a multimillion-dollar renovation of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum Plaza in Austin, Texas.
The event was detailed in the Austin American-Statesman.
Lady Bird Johnson, was wife of the United States’ 36th President Lyndon Baines Johnson who succeeded President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. He served as president and she as first lady from 1963 to 1969.
Lady Bird died two years ago at age 94.
The $54 million project renovated the LBJ School of Public Affairs and Sid Richardson Hall. Former Lt. Gov. of Texas Ben Barnes, who was present at last Friday’s ceremony, made a gift of $1 million to the school improvement project earlier this year.
Federal earmarks and some state funding contributed to $34.25 million of the library and classroom restoration project.
Along with Ben Barnes, another former lieutenant governor Bill Hobby was present. Ben Barnes is credited with helping to get the school built by providing the initial funding. He also serves on the Lyndon Baines Johnson board of directors and the school’s advisory committee.
The renovations are designed to honor Lady Bird Johnson. The plaza floor was redone in granite and its planters transformed into planters that hold native trees and wildflowers.
The LJB Library and Museum was originally dedicated in 1971 and run by the LBJ Foundation and is one of 13 presidential libraries operated by the National Archives and Records Administration.
Speakers at the event included daughter Luci Baines Johnson. Other guests were former Johnson aide Joseph Califano Jr. and several foundation members.
