Desperation Growing in Haiti

Still inside the critical first few days after the worst natural disaster to hit in early 2010, aid workers are struggling to distribute food, water, and other basic supplies to the citizens of the still devastated city of Port-au-Prince.

Just days after a magnitude 7 earthquake hit the country of Haiti, citizens and survivors were growing desperate, waiting and still without the assistance that they need as the death toll continues to rise in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

With supplies becoming more scarce and help being derailed because of the devastation caused by the massive earthquake, Haitian survivors are growing impatient to the point that many are already looting and bombarding aid camps to get their hands on food and clean water. UN peacekeepers and the military of Brazil have requested additional help to add security to camps in order to avoid more looting.

As tempers continue to flare and international endowments grow larger, the International Red Cross had estimated the death toll to be at 50,000 as of the moment, based on the information obtained from the Haitian Red Cross and government officials.

Bodies stacked up amongst each other on the side streets, people sleeping in the open space, and makeshift hospitals are the prominent pictures of Haiti after the quake.

For many Haitians, the shock of the disaster is already waning as desperation sets in for the thousands of the country’s survivors. Groups can be seen burying their dead on the side of the streets while others scavenge for food and supplies in the rubble.

All around the world, more than 20 governments and the UN have already sent aid to help the disaster’s survivors. Powerful individuals and celebrities have also called to other people to pledge help to the earthquake survivors. Many of them like Quincy Jones and George Clooney are already planning on conducting fundraisers for the benefit of Haiti and its citizens.
