South Park Creators Hit Broadway
Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of the irreverent animated series South Park, have always included funny musical numbers in their films and TV shows. This time around, though, the duo has decided to undertake a different venue for their offbeat musical antics: Broadway.
The duo partnered with Robert Lopez, the creator of Avenue Q, to create a musical comedy entitled The Book of Mormon. The Broadway musical is set to debut in New Work March 2011.
With Lopez’s help, Stone and Parker wrote the show’s music, lyrics and book. Parker, along with Jason Moore (director of Avenue Q), will perform the directing duties.
The musical is the story of two young people – both Mormon missionaries – who go off to Uganda to spread the word, according to the New York Post. The show will also tell of the story of the Church of Latter-day Saints’ founder, Joseph Smith.
In addition, Stone and Parker have been traveling to and from Salt Lake City in Utah, which is a dominantly Mormon state, to study the religion. Parker believes that the Mormons in Salt Lake City are “bigger authorities on the Book of Mormon” compared to other Mormons.
In reference to the religion, Parker said, “I’ve never met a Mormon I didn’t like. They’re really nice people. They’re so Disney. They’re so Rodgers and Hammerstein.”
